Just three weeks ago, I shared my nine year anniversary and a few age-related issues that I had addressed. I also shared that I’m watching the timing chain tensioner, warm start issues, and alternator, all of which are still working within my expectations. However, driving home from a pleasant Thanksgiving dinner gave me quite a shock! I was driving in a dark, unfamiliar construction zone and found myself needing to accelerate to shift lanes. I dropped from 6th gear to 4th for a quick push from ~60mph to whatever I needed to make a safe lane change. The clutch slipped! I should have dropped to 3rd gear instead.
While a 3rd gear shift would have provided better acceleration, the clutch should have been fine for a short poke in 4th gear from 2800 RPM. I have a Stage 2 Endurance by South Bend Clutch (SBC). This clutch is rated to hold 465 lb-ft, which seems like a safe margin above the 371 lb-ft advertised by APR for their standard IS38 91 AKI tune. So having it slip relatively soon after its installation surprised me! I checked my records when I got home to see when the clutch was installed. Sure enough, it’s only two years old and has just 57,000 miles. I think that’s WAY too early for a clutch to slip!
What could cause this? My turbo-back exhaust system may be a factor. APR hasn’t sold a down pipe (DP) in years. So the dyno graph above probably doesn’t account for one. I immediately noticed an increase in low-end grunt when I first switched from Stage 1 (no DP) to Stage 2 (w/DP). Some say that it takes a 10% increase to be felt, or around 35 lb-ft in my application. Might my true torque output be closer to 400 lb-ft? I’m not interested in having it measured, but I am curious.
I’ve also wondered if my towing habits may have contributed to this. I haven’t towed nearly as much since 2023 as I did with the RSR clutch. My loads haven’t been as heavy, either. Pulling the trailer is never a problem, but all my clutches, whether stock, RSR, or SBC, protest when I back a trailer up my inclined driveway and execute an “S” maneuver to get the trailer where it needs to go. The maneuver requires slower-than-clutch speeds. Translation: I have to slip the clutch all the way up the driveway. That may have taken a harder toll on the SBC than it did on the RSR.
I asked my mechanic at Euro Pros in Yorktown about stronger options. He said that the Stage 2 Endurance is the “go-to clutch” for APR’s IS38 tune and that I’d be unhappy with the feel of any Stage 3 clutch. I do hate the Stage 3 clutch that’s in my daughter’s Golf. Sure, her 5-speed transmission is a different beast than my 6-speed, but I think a firmer clutch pedal would irritate me, especially if it engages as closely to the floor as hers. I REALLY don’t want to replace the clutch so soon! If I do, I suspect that I’ll choose another Stage 2 Endurance clutch and try to alter my backing habits.
I considered having my ECU flashed with the IS38 “Low Torque” file. This program reduces low-end torque by ~50 lb-ft while having zero impact on top-end power. Giving up 50 lb-ft seems like a terrible deal, but it’s not bad when I consider that it’s almost the same as the original “Stage 1” tune with the stock turbo. APR’s website doesn’t have a “crank” version of this dyno display, so I merged two wheel charts to show the curves against each other. Yes, I’d give up a lot of “area under the curve,” but I want to stretch this clutch to a reasonable lifespan, especially if doing so will allow me to prioritize the timing chain replacement next year. One thing is certain: The lack of low-end torque compels me to make a proper downshift to get the car moving! The extra torque had made me lazy! 😉
“Younger me” probably would hate this! Coming from the TDI community, I was very pleased with the low-end torque that a tuned GTI can deliver. I gave up some of that when I switched to an IS38. Do I want to lose even more with a low torque tune? I think a lot of customers go this route to reduce driveline strain and perhaps preserve their FWD tires! Although I do appreciate the driving dynamics of a tuned GTI, I’m less enthused as I age away from the louder exhaust note and potential cost of dealing with equipment failures. I’m still not in a rush to ditch my GTI even though I don’t drive it to its “full potential.” However, I’m more confident that my next vehicle will not be as spicy! I like the Tiguan, but I think I’d prefer the better engine, suspension, and interior in the Q5. Either choice will come from the used market, of course, where they are similarly priced since luxury brands depreciate faster.
The clutch is holding for now. I hope to see it hang on for at least a year, which would take the car to its 10-year mark. I know I told you that I’d drive this car until it can go no further, but I think it may be prudent to do some de-tuning in the future if I’m going to keep running the car as a workhorse! I’m sure there are older GTIs than mine on the road, but I’m not sure how many of them are past the 250,000-mile mark while exceeding 350 whp and towing trailers. I think most older tuned GTIs are weekend warriors and/or trailer queens. Tell me I’m wrong! 😉
What could de-tuning look like for me? I replaced my original IS20 turbo at 128,730 miles; my IS38 has been running for longer than that! My next turbo (when the time comes) will probably be a return to the stock IS20. That swap would also make reinstalling the stock down pipe and a Stage 1 tune convenient. While it would result in less power, I think it would also make the car less resource-intensive and a little quieter. I don’t think that 290 whp would be awful! My GTI has never been known as a horsepower car, anyway… the electronics are what commands the attention. 😀 What do you think?

I have a 2017 sport also….was wondering if you have replaced your HID bulbs? I feel like mine are not as bright as they once were.
Thanks for writing! My bi-xenons are still original. I had jokingly referred to the complex lighting system as “something else to break.” But they’ve been doing very well. I will admit, though, that I do not drive at night very much. Maybe 20% of total miles are in the dark for me, perhaps less. And I’ll drive with parking lights only just to keep the hours off the HIDs if I don’t think I need the extra light. Take Care!
